Product Description

Ushio (Hansmann) SmartArc HBX 300 Electronic Power Supply

is ideal for operation of 150 watt to 300 Watt Short-Arc Xenon Lamps. The Ushio SmartArc HBX 300 is a compact, microprocessor-controlled electronic xenon lamp ballast for selected 150 W through 300 W DC short-arc lamps. Designed for scientific, medical, solar-simulation, and specialty optical equipment, it combines selectable lamp power, power-factor-corrected wide-range AC input, regulated digital power management, and integrated cooling in one OEM power module. The ballast maintains stable electrical output as lamp voltage changes over operating life, helping preserve repeatable light output while providing end-of-life monitoring and protective shutdown.

Compared with a traditional magnetic ballast, the HBX 300 provides a smaller integration footprint, broader input-voltage compatibility, electronic power regulation, remote-control capability, and multiple protection functions. It is intended for installation inside properly engineered equipment with a compatible external ignitor, lamp enclosure, interlocks, wiring, and thermal management. Confirm the exact lamp operating point, ignitor configuration, interface revision, and final-system safety requirements before installation.

Applications

Scientific and Analytical Instrumentation

  • Short-arc xenon illumination for spectroscopy, fluorescence analysis, microscopy, radiometry, and optical test systems.
  • OEM instruments that require repeatable lamp power and monitored lamp end-of-life behavior.

Medical and Diagnostic Equipment

  • Specialty illumination modules for diagnostic analyzers, imaging systems, and other medical OEM equipment using compatible short-arc lamps.
  • Component-level integration where the completed device will undergo its own electrical, thermal, and regulatory validation.

Solar Simulation and Materials Testing

  • Medium-power xenon sources used in solar simulators, accelerated exposure equipment, and photomaterials evaluation.
  • Systems requiring electronic output control and an analog dimming input for optical feedback.

Industrial Optical Systems

  • Specialty inspection, metrology, imaging, and calibrated-light equipment built around compatible 150-300 W short-arc xenon lamps.

Features

  • Stable output across lamp life: Microprocessor-controlled digital power management compensates for changing lamp conditions and supports consistent illumination performance.
  • One platform for several lamp-power classes: Selectable output reduces the need to qualify a different ballast for every supported wattage.
  • System-level control: remote on/off, analog dimming for optical feedback, and a lamp-lit status output.
  • Protection for the lamp and equipment: Includes output short-circuit protection, arc-to-ground protection, end-of-life cutoff, lamp-failure shutdown, and thermal shutdown.
  • Simplified thermal design: The HBX 300 includes an integrated fan and a regulated 24 V auxiliary fan supply to simplify integration and verification of the completed end product assembly.
  • Meets UL 60601 medical device requirements when properly integrated into products operating short arc xenon lamps.
  • Compact OEM form factor: The module measures approximately 7.09 x 4.02 x 1.69 in. (180 x 102 x 43 mm) and weighs 1.54 lb (0.7 kg).

FAQs

What lamps can the USHIO SmartArc HBX 300 power supply operate?

The HBX 300 is designed for selected DC short-arc lamps in the 150-300 W range. Product literature identifies OSRAM XBO 150, XBO 250, and XBO 300; USHIO UXL 150 and UXL 300 UXR-300BF, UXR-300ES; and selected 300 W xenon lamps from Luxtel, PerkinElmer, and Excelitas. Superior Quartz , , ,

Confirm the exact lamp's voltage, current, ignition, polarity, thermal, and mechanical requirements before use.

Does the HBX 300 require a separate ignitor?

Yes. The technical documentation specifies connection to an external ZG20Xe-series ignitor, with asymmetric and symmetric versions shown. Select the ignitor to match the lamp and system architecture, and confirm whether it is included in the quoted package.

Can the HBX 300 operate from both 120 V and 230 V mains power?

Yes. Input range is 90-264 VAC at 47-63 Hz, allowing integration into equipment designed for common 120 V and 230 V mains supplies.  Ensure correctly rated wiring, grounding, fusing, connectors, and safety protection.

Can the xenon lamp output be dimmed or remotely controlled?

Yes.  Product designs can utilize the remote on/off, analog dimming input for optical feedback, and a lamp-lit status output for added features and capability.

How does an electronic xenon lamp ballast compare with a magnetic ballast?

An electronic ballast such as the HBX 300 provides regulated power, compact size, wide-range AC input, power-factor correction, selectable output, monitoring, and remote-control functions that are generally not available in a basic magnetic ballast. The result is easier OEM integration and better control of lamp operating conditions, although the electronic module still requires an external ignitor and a properly engineered high-voltage lamp system.

What is the difference between the HBX 180 and HBX 300?

The HBX 180 is an open-frame version for applications up to 210 W. The HBX 300 includes additional heat sinking from  a housing and fan and supports lamp power up to 300 W. This page describes only the HBX 300, item 5001597.

Is the HBX 300 suitable for use in medical equipment?

Yes, when appropriately integrated, this product enables meeting requirements for medical applications and medical-safety evaluations, but the power supply is an OEM component rather than a complete certified medical device. The finished equipment must be evaluated for all applicable electrical, thermal, EMC, mechanical, and regulatory requirements.

Warranty

For technical or warranty support, provide the HBX 300 item number 5001597, approximate date of order, serial number, lamp manufacturer and model, selected wattage, AC input voltage, ignitor model, operating hours, and a description of the fault. Do not service, reconnect, or test the ballast while energized; the lamp circuit can generate hazardous high voltage.
