Product Description

Jelight CL-3000

is a microprocessor-controlled UV crosslinker designed for nucleic acid immobilization and controlled laboratory irradiation at 254 nm. Featuring six 8 W UV-C tubes and an integrated radiometer, it delivers programmable UV energy or timed exposures within an enclosed, safety-interlocked chamber.

Applications

Nucleic Acid Crosslinking and Membrane Immobilization

Immobilizes DNA and RNA onto compatible membranes for Southern, Northern, dot, and slot blotting applications. Programmable UV energy delivery supports consistent crosslinking conditions during membrane preparation.

Molecular Biology Research

Supports laboratory procedures involving DNA photo-nicking, UV-induced molecular modifications, gene mapping, and RecA function studies. Controlled UV exposure allows researchers to establish repeatable irradiation conditions for experimental workflows.

Laboratory Decontamination and Contamination Control

Provides controlled 254 nm UV-C irradiation for selected laboratory decontamination procedures, including PCR contamination reduction. Effectiveness depends on the UV dose, exposure conditions, and validated procedures; UV irradiation does not guarantee complete sterilization.

Features

  • Microprocessor-controlled operation supports repeatable UV energy and timed exposures.
  • Integrated radiometer calibrated to a NIST-traceable standard monitors accumulated UV energy during energy-controlled operation.
  • Six 8 W UV-C tubes provide uniform 254 nm ultraviolet illumination within the chamber.
  • Preset and user-defined exposure settings accommodate different laboratory procedures.
  • UV-blocking viewing window and door safety interlock help reduce accidental UV exposure.
  • Aluminum exposure chamber and protective quartz sensor window support routine laboratory operation and maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What UV dose is recommended for immobilizing DNA or RNA on transfer membranes?

The manufacturer's operating manual recommends 120 mJ/cm² for nucleic acid immobilization on transfer membranes. Follow the membrane manufacturer's instructions and the applicable laboratory protocol, as the appropriate dose may vary by membrane and application.

Can the CL-3000 be used to reduce PCR contamination or disinfect laboratory surfaces?

Yes, the CL-3000 supports selected PCR contamination-reduction and laboratory UV-C disinfection procedures. Effectiveness depends on the delivered UV dose, surface exposure, and target material, so validated cleaning and disinfection procedures remain necessary.

Does the CL-3000 need recalibration after replacing its 254 nm UV tubes?

No recalibration is required when replacing the original tubes with compatible 254 nm replacements of the same wavelength. The manufacturer recommends replacing all six tubes together; changing to a different UV wavelength requires the appropriate calibration procedure and equipment.

When should I select energy-controlled exposure instead of timed exposure?

Use energy-controlled exposure when a specific UV dose is required, as the radiometer monitors accumulated energy and compensates for changes in tube intensity. Timed exposure runs for a selected duration without measuring delivered UV energy. For timed operation, the manufacturer recommends allowing one to two minutes for the tubes to warm up.

What happens if the chamber door is opened during an exposure?

Opening the door activates the safety interlock and aborts the exposure cycle. Closing the door restores the last entered setting, and pressing START begins a new cycle. Never bypass the interlock; discontinue use if the UV tubes remain illuminated with the door open.
